The birds are chirping. The flowers are blooming. The days are getting longer. Spring is in the air, as is the reminder of that dreaded overhaul of cleaning and clearing out of all the spaces that we occupy. And while many folks apply this line of thought strictly to their homes, it’s important we don’t forget the office. The need for both the re-organization and fresh re-start at your desk could be the biggest thing standing in the way of your success!
On March 20th, we had the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. This essentially signifies the annual return of the day in which the amount of daylight equals the same amount of darkness. Following this equilibrium comes longer and warmer days, and more life to be birthed in both the animal and plant kingdoms and beyond. For centuries, humanity has celebrated this day to acknowledge the rebirth of all that died in winter.
This is a time of clearing the old and wiping away the cobwebs. Maybe you have let those papers pile up far past what is acceptable. Perhaps your computer needs to be cleared of debris and old, useless documents. It’s even an opportunity for you to shift the comfort of your work space to accommodate a more productive, pleasant flow of ergonomics and energy.
1. DEEP CLEAN THAT DESK Possibly the most obvious of all tasks involved in a spring cleaning overhaul is the dreaded ‘deep clean’. Clear your desk of all papers, supplies and get out the cleaning products – maybe even turn on some good tunes to get you into the spirit. Give everything on your desk a nice wipe down with a multi-surface disinfectant (you could even create your own using a diluted formula of apple cider vinegar – an extremely effective cleaning solution and is safe for both the environment and the body). Make sure to give everything a final dusting, including your keyboard. To take it a step further, set-up weekly or monthly reminders in your calendar to make this cleaning business a habit – each time giving yourself and your work a fresh start!
2. GET RID OF THOSE PAPERS
It’s time to finally take care of that stack of useless papers sitting in the corner of your desk space. If they are necessary documents, consider creating a filing system and putting them away once and for all. You could also scan them and save them on your computer for strictly digital use. If they can be disposed of, get yourself to the shredder immediately! It might help to have a small shredder by your desk to deal with their removal as they arise.
3. ORGANIZE THAT DIGITAL DESKTOP
One thing most people ignore during big spring cleaning events is their computers. In this day and age, our laptops or desktops frequently take the brunt of our hoarding habits or disorganized disasters. Because we are typically the only ones seeing this mess, we often refuse to deal with it – like sweeping dirt under the rug. Take the opportunity to organize your digital files in folders and delete duplicates or dated documents. Going through and deleting old emails is a great plan of action, too!
Upon returning to your office after taking the time to spruce up your space this spring, you’ll feel so ready to tackle your work with a new level of energy and excitement. The cleanliness and organization will inspire a fresh-start and new eyes to create more success and productivity and your spirit will feel calmer, too.
